MWAH…Kissie Cookies a la Vee

What is better than having a favorite cookie recipe based on childhood memories of your grandmother? The right answer is “nothing”!

I have eaten thousands of Kissie cookies in my life and skipped hundreds of dinners due to a full Kissie tummy.  I have laughed a thousand laughs with my sisters due to sugar highs.  Kissie cookies are the best!  If you have children, or taste buds, make them NOW!

The best part about these cookies is that you can create so many different variations based on the time of year. The standard variation is listed in this recipe, but you can substitute the brownie I mixture with a mint based or even a completely homemade version…as well as the kisses with mint truffle or red/white stripes for Valentine’s Day – YUM!

{Please note that a printable recipe is included at the bottom of this post}
(1) Purchase brownie mix, chocolate chips, powdered sugar (if needed) and a package of Hershey Kisses.  Most people already have eggs and water, but you know the drill if you don’t!

(2) Dump out the brownie mix into a medium mixing bowl.  Don’t start with a rubber spatula like I did – use a wooden or metal spoon, because this is cookie mix people!

(3) So the brownie mix we got came with Hershey’s syrup, as if we didn’t have enough deliciousness.  I set this aside for later.

(4) mmmm…chocolate chips.  Add your chips and move on to the next step!

(5) Crack your egg.  Simple as that.

(6) Give it a little hydration – just a touch of water!

(7) Stir it around…and around…and around.

(8) I got bored with stirring, and decided it was time for the chocolate syrup.  This step doesn’t apply if your mix didn’t come with chocolate syrup.

Hey, Mama!  Anything here for me?!!

(9) Mix until you can’t see any more brownie mix powder.  It’s hard, hence the metal spoon that is now present.

(10) Take your bowl of about 1/2 cup powdered sugar, not the whole bag like I did, and get ready to roll!

(11) Take about 2 Tbsp. of dough and roll into a 1-inch ball.  This is when your fingers start to get messy, but don’t lick them yet!

(12) Dip those little balls of heaven into the powdered sugar.  Coat it well, as the cookies will spread out when baked.

(13) Almost there!

(14) Place your baking sheet into a 350 degree oven and set the bake timer for 8-10 minutes.  I started with 8, and increased to 10 … very likely due to the Hershey’s syrup.  This time may also be adjusted based on taste.  Note that anything past 12-14 minutes is at the sole caution of the baker.  I make no warranties on the tastiness of burnt cookies!  8 minutes is a happy spot.  Start there!

(15) Take a peek…mmmm!

(16) Remove the foil wrappers from your Hershey Kisses so they’re ready when the cookies are removed from the oven.  Open an extra one for immediate gratification.

(17) Check the cookies when the timer goes off and remove from the oven if flat and delicious looking!

(18) Immediately place Hershey Kiss on top of each cookie, slightly pressing down to snuggle it in.  After approximately 2-4 minutes out of the oven, I highly recommend lifting the cookie with a spatula, but not yet removing from the pan.  Brownies have a tendency to stick, so you can either lightly grease beforehand or lift before the cookies cool.  Both options will work!

(19) I decided to flash cool these suckers since I was bringing them to a dinner and didn’t want them to stick to each other.  I removed the cookies from the baking sheet and placed them on wax paper over another baking sheet.  20 minutes in the refrigerator and they were perfect and ready to go!  If you don’t have to travel, eat these cookies warm with a hefty portion of vanilla or peppermint ice cream.  Yummmmmmm!
