Over the last 3 years of lovin’ on Kate, we’ve tried so many products on the market for puppies and dogs. We love shopping at smaller, natural pet stores over the big chains too since we know we’ll find many unique and safe products for our little one. We also want Kate to live a million years, so everything that enters her tiny body or comes into contact needs to be as healthy and safe as possible.
Now that we have Trudy coming along, we’ve compiled the best of the best in puppy and dog products based on our experiences alone. Husband pretty much compiled this list as he’s our #1 puppy researcher and caretaker. I’ve completely deferred to him in this area of our lives and Kate’s as healthy and safe as can be! I’m so proud of him for caring for our Bug, and soon to be Bugs! So, let’s jump right in.
> Fromm’s Puppy Gold Food – We recently switched Kate to Fromm’s from a previously fantastic brand of food that changed their formula. We’ll be feeding Trudy the Fromm’s puppy food while Kate gets the big girl food. So far she’s loving it and she’s been more, shall we say, “regular” lately.
> Cloud Star Tricky Trainers – Kate will do ANYTHING to get these bad boys. Cloud Star is also a really fantastic company. We had a small packaging malfunction recently and they replaced the bag and sent us a super cool bumper sticker too (“Wag More. Bark Less.” — yes please!).
> Cloud Star Buddy Wash – Another Cloud Star product that we LOVE! It smells delicious and Kate has literally never smelled “like a dog” in her life (except for when she smelled like a skunk).
> Nylabone Dura-Chew – We’ve gone through maybe 6 of these in Kate’s 3 years. They’re such great chew toys – safe and effective for little teething puppies! On Friday’s video you’ll even see me put one in my mouth! Haha!
> Kong Toys – I’m linking up ALL of the Kong toys at Petco because we love so many of them. The squeakers, little red treat Kongs, Wubba Friends, Braidz Monkey, etc. They’re awesome and Kate has so much fun with all of them. The Monkey was her first boyfriend!
> Hard Kennel – Let’s just say Kate was not a fan of her crate until we got this hard top crate. Dogs thrive in cave-like atmosphere so it’s super important to provide it for them.
> AKC Sherpa Pet Carrier – This is a must have for picking up a puppy via plane or car. I can’t say we used it a high number of times, but when we did I felt much safer. Trudy will be flying from Dallas to Chicago in our carrier.
> Collapsible Food & Water Bowls – These are so great for home and travel use. The collapsible function makes it so easy to give pups a drink at any time. We make sure to have a water bottle with us at all times and pop these bowls open whenever Kate needs a drink!
> Collar, Harness & Leash – There are soooooo many choices for this but we recommend a fixed length leash for puppies and dogs. If you live in a rural area or are headed to a large park, an adjustable leash is awesome to get some more length and running out of the pup!
> Potty Pads – Most certainly the biggest puppy win product out there. We actually had Kate trained on these potty pads for her first two years while we lived in the City. She easily made the transition from potty pads to outdoors though when we moved to the suburbs.
> Nature’s Miracle Stain & Odor Remover – Despite the potty pad training, there are always accidents. Combat the accidents with a great clean up product!
This list covers what we couldn’t live without in raising our pups! We have so many other amazing products to mention, but if you’re adopting a puppy and need to know the “must haves” – you’ve come to the right place.
We’re always looking for new things to try too. Is there a product on your list that didn’t make ours? Please leave a comment if so and we’ll give it a try!
