HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
January 1st is here in Chicago, IL and I’m starting it off with a bang. The 2014 Directive has officially kicked off!
What is The 2014 Directive?
It’s a movement towards achieving greatness in 2014, one month at a time. Whether you need to lose a couple pounds, organize your closet, or save a bit of cash, The 2014 Directive structure will get you there.
How can I participate and link-up?
Visit The 2014 Directive details page for all the information you need to get started on the right foot. It’s super easy and ends with you adding your link below for your January Directive so we can cheer you on to success!
This month’s link-up will be open until the last day of the current month, so add your January Directive post any time during the month.
My January Directive
My very first Directive is something I knew had to happen even before I created the whole program for the year.
January’s Directive calls for a NO SPEND MONTH from January 1 through 31.
We’ve set a very strict budget for the month with all of our set bills plus any necessary and expected costs. We’ve already purchased things we know we’ll need in January such as vitamins and toothpaste to avoid having to make runs to the store. The main focus will be on staying away from any and all online or store shopping for clothes, books, any form of entertainment, craft supplies (*sad face*), etc. We’ll also work on trimming our food and gas costs.
What are we going to do all month?! We’re definitely going to be staying home a lot but we’ll be playing board games, reading the MANY books we have on our shelves, making use of our Netflix/Hulu accounts, playing with our new Christmas goodies, watching the Bachelor (Juan Pablo!!), probably working on some taxes (lol), get back to the gym (since we’re paying for it), finally organize all our belongings, etc.
We literally wrote down every form of entertainment or household task we have pending completion and if we’re ever bored in January we’ll just head right to the list. Sounds easy, right?
What happens if we see something we want to buy? I’m not used to restraining myself if I see, say, a $20 e-book. In January, though, everything not currently budgeted for is off limits. We’ve created a list to record absolutely anything we want to purchase during the month. If, on February 1st, it’s still an absolute desire, we’ll add it to a future budget. I’m most nervous about seeing awesome sales! Haha.
The whole point of this first Directive is to set good habits in the beginning of the year. While my January Directive is time-bound only to the calendar month of January, I’m expecting to enforce the whole “restraint” mentality through the year. We have so many savings goals to reach in the next 2-3 years and I want to simplify our lives this year – we don’t need all the things!!
Notes for Next Month
Next month’s Directive will be live on Wednesday, January 29, 2014. This date is listed in the Participant Planner so you won’t forget!
We’ll be adding another section for January’s Progress Report in the next blog post, so make sure to keep track of progress in your planner.
