I love reading why others started their blog and I wanted to share my own little history with you today too!
In celebration of how far we’ve come and where we’re headed this year, I’m giving away one complete Blog Planner + 2014/2015 Blog Calendar printable set worth $30 from my Etsy shop. Enter below!
Kate was 2 years old when I secured our domain in October 2012. We hadn’t even found Trudy yet (though we had obviously named her already). We just knew that she would be ours within the year and that she would be the perfect addition to our family. I wasn’t too keen on generic blog names that might fade in meaning over time, so we decided on Kate & Trudy. It’s catchy, memorable, and completely meaningful to us!
The only problem at first was that quite a few readers in the beginning thought that I was Kate and Kate was Trudy. Whoops! We solved that problem in August when Trudy was born!
2011 & 2012 were two crazy years filled with lots and lots of work. I felt like all I did was work my day job or my photography business. I wasn’t finding time for any fun crafting or photography for myself, let alone time to spend with hubby! I was nonetheless feeling a
little lot uninspired.
I decided that 2013 would be different. I raised my prices for my photography business to reduce my volume. Check!
I obviously still had a full time job to tend to but I vowed to improve my time management skills and one way to do this was to begin to telecommute 100% of the time. Check!
I created the blog in order to keep myself on this path of focusing on personal time when I had it or finding time to develop new ideas. You may think starting a blog seems counter-intuitive to personal time, but I started it as a journal, essentially. I’m not one for handwritten diaries, so a blog with tons of photos and recaps was my perfect solution!
A secondary reason for establishing the blog included updates for family since I’m not much of a phone person. I had zero clue yet how much fun it would be to meet other bloggers and network but that has since been a great plus to being a part of the blogging world!
I originally structured the blog with 5 different “main topics” listed below. My blog design included a little bit of color coding for each topic because, of course, color coding keeps things organized!
> Marriage & Family
> Crafts & DIY
> Photography & Design
> Organization & Time Management
> Cooking & Recipes
You can see my very first post here.
Throughout 2013, I realized I was not writing for certain main topics and frankly, some just weren’t that exciting for me after all. I started to find my groove and finally landed on organization and simplification as the overreaching topic for the blog. I ALWAYS had fun writing about ways to organize and simplify. Time to strategize!
2014 has been an amazing year so far. I reflected on 2013 and shared my first year of blogging lessons learned a few months ago.
I established my one word for 2014 of “simplify” based on what I discovered last year and I’ve tried to keep the blog focused on this topic.
The 2014 Directive was the perfect next step to support this topic and I’m just loving the program and all the girls involved so far. Everyone’s learning so much about themselves, their limits, and what they can accomplish if given the right opportunity to stay accountable!
I have so many themes coming up as part of my own Directives and in support of others’ and hope you’ll find some ways to simplify your life a little bit more after reading or following along with my future blog series.
If you’re not already following via BlogLovin,’ make sure to do so. It’s the easiest method to stay up to date with your favorite blogs and it’s worth 10 points in the giveaway! I’m most excited about my brand new Blog Planner available for purchase in my Etsy shop. The planner has been miraculous in keeping my blog activities in check. “Simplify” this blog planner has done for me since I started using it a few weeks ago!
Today I’m giving away one complete Blog Planner + 2014/2015 Blog Calendar worth $30 (2015 isn’t even in the shop yet!). You’ll be all set literally through 12/31/2015. Your domain might not even be extended that long! The giveaway starts NOW and goes through 11:59am on Wednesday, March 19th.
If you aren’t the lucky winner, you can still purchase the set (or anything in the shop totaling $15 or more) for 15% off using the code KTBLOGPLAN14. Hooray!!
Good luck everyone – happy simplifying!
