The 2014 Directive: April {a link-up}

It’s March 26th and there is still snow on the ground!!! I have no words…only the hope that we jump quickly into April with the potential to actually find warm weather. Is winter still hanging on where you live too?! Either way, let’s dive right into The 2014 Directive.

What is The 2014 Directive?

The 2014 Directive started on January 1st as a “modern new year’s resolution.” It’s an Instagram & blog link-up structured in a way to maximize success of your goals by setting them on a monthly basis. Whether you need to lose a couple pounds, organize your closet, or save a bit of cash, The 2014 Directive structure will get you there.

There are no strict guidelines for participating and you set your own goals. Whatever is relevant to your life each month!

My April Directive

I tossed around so many ideas and actually just landed on my Directive for April this past weekend. I originally wanted to do the Whole30 but more work travel and overall lack of mental preparation put a dent in this. I may try this later in the year.

My April Directive is to focus on food.

That’s right, April is all about food! Not eating it in copious amounts, but rather planning, organizing, and preparing it. Here’s how I’ll go about accomplishing my April Directive with required assistance from the Husband, aka the household chef (he’s seriously amazing)…

> Create a Meal Plan binder : I LOVE my binders and found the most adorable printable set here on Etsy. I thought about making a set myself, but I’m a total amateur with meal planning and this set is just too stinking cute. Totally different than what I’d create myself!

> Review & downsize our cookbooks : After the meal plan binder is assembled, I want to go through 100% of our cookbooks to flag meals to try. I also want to parse our cookbook collection down to 3-5 main cookbooks and no more than 5-10 “specialty” cookbooks (like 500 Cupcakes – YUM). I want all cookbooks to fit into one small moving box.

> Create a digital & print recipe workflow : I’m actually in a huge and awesome recipe exchange with my sweet friend, Adela. She recommended a great digital recipe workflow that I want to try to finally put together. I also need to figure out the best way to store recipes in the Meal Plan binder and/or a separate binder. If I create a workflow now, it’ll make finding, making, and keeping recipes on hand that much easier!

I thought about adding calorie counting/tracking to my Directive but I’m pretty good at tracking and it’s super easy to track when meals are planned! I want to focus on the organizing aspects of this month’s Directive so I’m better prepared for each month ahead as I really focus on eating healthier to lose weight once and for all.

I’m super excited to read all about your goals! Make sure to link-up below any time this month and join the Google+ Community ASAP!

Past Directive Progress Reports

March 2014 (the link-up) ~ Take Care of Myself.

I think I had a pretty even split between successful goals and unsuccessful goals outlined for my March Directive. Some of the more successful ones included sleeping 8.5 hours a night, drinking 60-75 oz of water a day, taking a multi-vitamin (once I bought one!), and limiting sweets (surprisingly). I also dried & styled my hair most days as opposed to typically wearing it wet in a bun each day (so lame). I wasn’t 100% successful in each of these categories, but I’m pretty proud of myself!

It was really hard for me to give up alcohol but I definitely cut back. I didn’t play around with new hairstyles but as my hair gets longer, this is a goal I’ll keep. I also decided not to go for the spa treatments I had planned in favor of a new work bag from Kate Spade at the very beginning of the month. I’ll take a bag over spa treatments any day!

Something unexpected was how much I freaking LOVED dry brushing. My skin is silky smooth now as a result of dry brushing and consistent application of body lotion. I wish I’d started this a long time ago! I also love my new Root Pretty makeup and will plan to share a review sometime in the coming weeks.

All in all, I’m feeling great after a month of “taking care of myself.” I’ll definitely continue most of these habits!

February 2014 (the link-up) ~ Organize & Purge my Closet

I’m so happy to say that I haven’t gone crazy in filling up my closet with new clothes since last month. I did purchase 3 new work outfits for my business trips but they’re pieces I’ve already worn a few times for different occasions. I mentioned before that I purchased a Kate Spade work bag as my birthday treat, so I’m getting rid of more bags than I’d originally planned on in the initial purge. I think that’ll be an ongoing trend – buy a nice, new piece and purge multiple. I also signed up to get my first StitchFix (referral link) in April!! I can’t wait…

January 2014 (the link-up) ~ Complete a “No Spend” Month

We spent a third of the normal amount during January’s “no spend” month and have since cut back from last year’s spending tremendously! Budgeting can TOTALLY be fun. Have you seen the budget kit in my Etsy shop? That’s what we’re using! We recently made the decision to payoff our car loan instead of keeping the money in our savings account. I really don’t think we’d be in such a good decision-making place right now without our January Directive…so I’m really glad we chose to kick off the year with creating such a good habit!
